We are asked many questions here at LLR, some about pet rats in general and others about our rattery. Because of this, we have decided to put our most asked questions in one spot. Of course, if you still have questions or need something explained in more details, we are always happy to answer any and every question you have. If you think a question and answer should be listed below, but isn't, please let us know and we will add it.
Q- Should I get males or females?
A- This is probably one of the most common questions, and there is no right answer to it, besides getting the one that will fit you best. While both males and females make amazing pets, they also both have pros and cons. Males are larger and tend to be much more calm. They are happy sitting in your lap while you scratch their head. A downside to getting a male would be the urine marks they leave, (a drop or two of urine as they walk). Females are smaller and tend to be much more playful. They love to run and explore and while they do stop to give some kisses, they don't cuddle as much as males. The downside to females is that they are more prone to tumors, though spaying a female will lessen the chance.
*Please note that these are how males and females tend to be most of the time. We have males that are very playful and females that love to cuddle.
Q- How many rats should I adopt?
A- Once again this question doesn't have one set right answer. Rats should always have a same sex friend living in the cage with them. They are extremely social and no matter how much time and attention you spend on them, they will still be lonely. We do not adopt out a single rat unless you already have other rats of that same sex (or a spayed female or neutered male). As far as a number past two, that depends on three things: 1. How many you can provide a good and safe home for (which includes cost of food and vet bills if needed). 2. How many can fit into the cage without it being over crowded. If you need help trying to determine that, there are several Cage Calculators out there. Click Here to be taken to one. And 3. How much time and attention you have daily for each rat.
Q- How long do rats live for?
A- They usually live between 2-3 years.
Q- What kind of bedding should I use? What kind of bedding do you use?
A- Here at LLR we use Eco Bedding in some cages and highly recommend it. We also use fleece, but this can be very time consuming and difficult to keep up with.
Q- Is it a good idea to Spay or Neuter my rats?
A- Both males and females benefit from it. With females it lessens the chance or tumors or cancer. With males, it helps stop aggressive behavior. Of course, like with any surgery, there are risks with it.
Q- When do you wean your babies? When can I take mine home?
A- We start to wean around 4 weeks. We like to have our males and females seperated around the 5 week mark, just to be safe (Rats can start breeding at 5 weeks old). You can take your ratties home at 5/6 weeks.
Q- Can I come visit to see the rats and get more information?
A- Yes, we would be happy to have you come over to get any information you need. However, we are a closed rattery and do not give tours. If you would like to meet a couple rats, and let us know ahead of time, we can bring them out for you.
